On July 16, 2020,  the LMUSD Board of Education took action to require distance learning for the start of the 20-21 school year.

As a parent of an LMUSD student, I understand the stress that comes with distance learning. For many families, lack of technology and internet access adds another level of stress. Without internet access, students will fall behind in their education. While LMUSD is doing a good job supporting our children, we must do our part to help. As a community, we can work together to provide free WiFi to families throughout our area.

Imagine, free WiFi at our public parks? Free WiFi at coffee shops, laundromats, gyms, or restaurants? The bottom line? – We need to Reach our children in order to Teach them.

This is why I am introducing the Reach 2 Teach initiative, an effort to bring our community together to offer FREE community hotspots for kids.

I pledge to work with local businesses, our city, and the school district to get free WiFi, safe and secure, in our parks.

LMUSD is using Google Classroom as their remote learning platform.

  • Lucia Mar is beginning the school year with distance learning for all students due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As San Luis Obispo County is currently on the watchlist, we are required to do so based on the Governor’s orders. We do not currently have an end date for our distance learning plan, but we will provide regular updates to staff and families when we are able to move closer to an in-person program.
  • When we are able to return to an in-person program, we plan to reopen with the am/pm split schedule to ensure that we are able to abide by physical distancing requirements to keep students and staff safe.
  • The District, in consultation with state and county authorities, will continue evaluating the feasibility of conducting in-person instruction in a way that ensures the safety of students, families and staff.
  • New state law requires that districts provide a learning program that is as close as possible to the rigor and expectations of regular, in-person education, with synchronous (live online learning with the teacher and class members) and asynchronous (work that can be done independently on or off the computer) learning for every student.
  • Attendance is required, although students will be able to complete many assignments outside the regular school hours described below as well. Grading will also return to normal, instead of the CR/NC plan we used in the spring closure.
  • Schools will be communicating with families to explain materials pick up plans for the start of the school year. Every student will be provided with a Chromebook if they need one, and we will check out new curriculum materials and provide needed supplies.
  • Food services will be offered at many school sites across the district, and we plan to provide delivery service for our more remote areas.

Students need adequate internet access to successfully distance learn. The key to distance learning is the ability to access the classroom virtually – via the internet. If internet access is not available to our students, a digital divide is created.

“Without equitable access to distance learning technology while students are at home, California risks exacerbating education inequality across the state.” – EdSource

Based on data collected by the California Department of Education on broadband subscriptions by census tract and low-income and English Learner students and total enrollment by school district, it is possible that up to 39% of LMUSD households in Arroyo Grande may not have broadband access.

Below is the data collected from LMUSD in 2018. The map shows the rate of internet subscriptions in Arroyo Grande for 2018, the latest year available.  That’s before the pandemic and the effort to connect all students to online learning. The map shows census tracks color coded by rate of broadband subscriptions.

UPDATE: The City of Arroyo Grande announced August 18, 2020 that free WiFi service is now available at Elm Street Park in Arroyo Grande. This opportunity was made possible through a partnership with PeakWiFi and is being provided to all students in the Lucia Mar Unified School District who are distance learning this school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is the most feasible and quite honestly, fastest way to get internet access to our students? COMMUNITY EFFORT.

With the support of our community, local businesses, and neighboring cities, WE can offer WiFi access to families who are struggling with adequate to no internet access.

“Having convenient free access to the internet for our students will be crucial in their learning process and achievement in life. Peak WiFi is proud to be a partner in this worthy endeavor and grateful to our community for including us” – Tom Kosta, Founder/CEO of Peak WiFi

Peak WiFi is a proud Reach 2 Teach partner exploring opportunities to work with the cities of Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach to provide wireless connections at various public locations in the near future.

How can you help?  If you are a business with the ability and space to offer a hotspot to students, become a Reach 2 Teach partner. Work with your internet provider to set up basic security or call us and we’ll help you. You set your limitations – whatever works for you and your business. In return, you get to help bridge the digital divide and help students succeed.

“Whatever we can do as business owners to help our community get through this difficult time we are willing to do. Access to WiFi will be critical this school year and we are happy to share with whomever may need access. We are proud to support the Reach 2 Teach initiative started by City Councilmember Lan George.” – Frank Shiro, Owner, Rooster Creek Tavern and Mason Bar
